A personal trainer is a person who helps people exercise. The scope of practice for a personal trainer is to enhance the components of fitness for the general, healthy population. The five classic components of fitness are muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility, although there are other subsets like power, skill, and speed. The general population is defined as an age range of 18 to about 50 (45 and younger for males, 55 and younger for females). The definition of healthy in this context means an absence of a disease that would affect one’s ability to exercise. Anyone outside that scope of practice should be placed in a trainer’s scope after a visit to the doctor to see what kind, if any, exercise they are capable of.

Many personal trainers work through local fitness centers aka personal training studios and health clubs, assisting clients within the facility. Others may be available for sessions in a clients home, or serve as instructors for fitness classes. Trainers are generally needed to demonstrate various exercises and help clients improve their exercise techniques. Due to the more interpersonal contact between a trainer and a client versus a general gym setting, a trainer is more readily able to provide motivation and support to an individual in an exercise program, in addition to proper technical instruction. A trainer can keep records of their clients’ exercise sessions to help monitor progress, and may also advise their clients on how to modify their lifestyle outside of the gym to improve their fitness.

One of the fastest-growing fields of fitness training is corporate fitness. Many large companies are beginning to offer corporate fitness packages for employees wishing to create or maintain a healthy exercise program. Personal trainers are now often going into offices to train office staff at their desks in their lunch breaks

The Boot Camp military style of fitness training is very big at the moment with residential and non-residential courses springing up all over. The appeal of these seems to be that most of us lack a bit, or a lot, of will power when it comes to making ourselves do regular exercise, no matter how good we know it is for our health. We like someone to get us up and get us moving and who better to do this but two ex British Army Soldiers.

My friends and colleagues Robert “Boris” Stone and Chris “Billy” Smart, (you can tell they’re ex-army can’t you, over 30 years between them), have been running residential fitness boot camps, military style, for some time. For I don’t know how long, I have been trying to get Boris, a fully qualified fitness instructor and personal trainer, to partner with me to put his special form of training routines online. One of the main points Boris is keen to get across in the training is to get outside, whatever the weather, you don’t need expensive gym memberships or home equipment. YOUNGSTERS will get a lift when a week-long festival of youth sports supported by the Royal Air Force hits Weymouth Beach this summer.

The Youth Beach Sport and Sand Soccer tournaments will take place from Monday, July 26, to Thursday, July 29.

The week’s events will culminate in the 2010 volleyball classic championships from Friday, July 30, to Sunday, August 1.

The event will be staged in a specially-constructed sports arena with free grandstand seating for spectators with two show courts, nine outside courts, a marquee village and live music.

Organisers say the annual championship is the ‘Wimbledon’ of beach volleyball and will attract the top 120 two-a-side men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams from throughout the country and overseas players.

The World Shotgun Cup comes to Dorset in May 2010, and it’ll bring major benefits to the region.

The Southern Counties Shooting Ground near Dorchester in Dorset will stage the prestigious competition in May, when the countdown to the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games will be well and truly underway.

Southern Counties Shooting was founded in 1959 and is now the largest shooting ground in the country with over 450 fully automatic traps offering DTL, ABT, Universal Trench, Olympic Trap, Double Trap, both Olympic and English Skeet, English Sporting, Sportrap and FITASC. Southern Counties is a CPSA Premier Plus shooting ground. The trap, skeet and double trap layouts are all equipped with new Laporte machines and Italian Electronica Progetti Computers. Our sporting layout includes a grouse butt and our renowned 140 foot high tower.

The ground has hosted numerous National and International Competitions and has been awarded as the Official Training Ground for the 2012 London Olympics. Major shoots in 2009 include the Fitasc Universal Trap World Championships, the Dougall DTL weekend and both Olympic Trap and Fitasc Home Internationals.

In 2010 in conjunction with British Shooting and West Dorset District Council, Southern Counties will be hosting the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup which is a qualifying event for London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
